It
all started when a 15 year old Sarel de Bruin had his first
workout in January 1987. It was an old Gym in Heidelberg. The
equipment was homemade and the first Health and Racquet club
was years away. Arnold was the terminator and every boy wanted
muscles. |
|
As
the same time 30 KM away in Springs, Pieta van der Heever traveled
the 10 km to Kerry Burns Health club with his bicycle. An avid
rugby and tennis player, he needed to gain some badly needed
muscle. His father was a school principal and Pieta made sure
he deserved his place in every team. |
|
Back
in Heidelberg Sarel started his first job as manager of the
gym, opening at 5 in the morning, going to school at 7 and
then returning at 2 until he locked up at 8. His pay for this
full time was one tin muscle builder powder a month. It did
not matter, because he wanted to train. Soon afterwards the
gym went up for sale and Sarel`s father, the well known magician
and ventriloquist Jannie de Bruin bought the gym for Sarel.
At the time Sarel was only 16 years old and in standard eight.
The business was a success and somehow Sarel managed to finish
school, run the business, compete in body building competitions,
become a professional wrestler and winning close to 70 fights. |
|
Going
to a school for boys, Pieta met his first girlfriend only when
he went to University. He was shy, but he was a handsome boy
and soon all his time was spent between varsity rugby and girls.
He met his wife Landi while studying and all the other girls
were forgotten. Pieta finished university with a B.Com in Sports management
and a degree in Sport science. |
|
In
1996 Sarel and Pieta met for the first time. Pieta has big ideas
and soon convinced Sarel to part with half of his business.
They upgraded the old gym to a modern sports centre. At that
time, Liezl Bester joined their team. |
|
Liezl,
a beautiful blonde girl from Heidelberg loved to train, and
loved Sarel even more. She visited the Gym (and Sarel) so often
that customers thought she worked there. She has a diploma in
Commercial Practice and her expertise were what was needed to
take the business to the next level. |
|
In
2001 they opened their branch in Oudtshoorn. It was modern,
hygienic and fully equipped with the best cardio and weight training
apparatus. |
|
In
2002 Pine Swart joined their team and the Mosselbay branch was
opened to the same standard oxigim clients are used to. The
club has unique views over the sea, harbor and waves. |
|

|
In
2006 Oxigim built a brand new building in Oudtshoorn. It covers
more than 1200 square meters and are situated in the centre
of town, on the riverbank with views of the river, Historical
buildings and the well known KKNK. |
|
